Dr Imelda Drumm discussed the hormonal stress response and vocal issues that may be encountered by the female professional singer. The voice and brain are reproductive hormonal target organs. The rapid hormonal and physical changes which can occur during fertility treatments and in pregnancy can disrupt both the voice and the emotional stress response of the singer. Women need considerable support during this time. Post-pregnancy and return to performance may be further disrupted due to lactation and other complex social attitudes.
